BABY STEPS (OCTOBER)

Wednesday, October 8, 2014

HAPPY OCTOBER, FRIENDS.

read a book | I told myself that I would read 22 books before I turned 23. That's TWO books a month. Have I started on that? Sadly, no. But granted, I did write that ambitious list while I was bored during summer break itchy for activities. Now I am in a new city and work life has started, and that list is the last thing on my mind. However, I am a woman of my word so I gotta get on this now! :) So... I joined a book club! A friend from work invited me and it was perfect because I knew this would be the kind of accountability and social activity good for me. We're reading "Before I Sleep" by S.J. Watson (has anyone read that? thoughts?) and I also want to try "Gone Girl" since it's been so highly recommended.

no spend coffee | There's free coffee in my work (right on my floor) and free coffee in my apartment, yet I choose to go OUT OF MY WAY to a Starbucks or a Caribou, wait in a long line, and then PAY for my coffee. That really doesn't make any sense. Taste can't really be the reason cause you all know I drown it in cream/sugar so "that authentic Ethiopian bean" isn't it. I have no excuse. This month, I want to try to limit myself and not spend money on coffee!

digitize handwriting | This is just a fun, side project I had been wanting to try for awhile now. Especially when I saw Whitney Blake make fun wall prints out of her handwriting! There are times when I doodle something and I think, "man I wish I could just take this and rather than look for a font I like." Hence, digitizing my handwriting is here.

gym 1x a week | I just want to be healthy.  If I can't make time for 45 minutes out of my entire week to do some cardio, then I'm doing something wrong.

host a gathering | Just for fun. (:

develop photos | Because I miss my friends and family and photos weren't meant to live on Facebook or Snapchat, but in your hands and in physical albums and walls so that when guests come over, you can bring the photos out to embarrass the subjects in them or break the ice if guests are awkward. Yes, that is the accurate history of photos.

create a moodboard | I'm designing less and doing Etsy less, so I thought committing to one project will keep my designing side happy for the month. And at the end I'll have something pretty to look at when I need a kick of inspiration.

YOUR TURN! :) What are your goals for this month? Share below, I'd love to hear!

TWENTY TWO

Friday, August 29, 2014

In a couple of days, August will be over.
In a couple of hours, it will be my last night in Naperville with my family.
In a couple of (more) hours, I will be a Minnesota resident.
In a couple of weeks, I will be a full-time worker.
So, so, so weird.

I was taking a look at my baby steps for August; reflecting and reevaluating how this month went. I completed a lot of the tasks I had set (minus the bonfire and Japan scrapbook), but overall, the month was a pretty tough one. Creatively, I felt no motivation or juice left in me to make anything. Physically, I felt like a squishy sloth (lolz @ the alliteration) all of the time. I wasn't eating healthy or being active or sleeping regularly, so my body often felt sluggish and slow. (But hey, calories don't count in your birthday month.) Spiritually, I was inconsistent; very reactive to my surrounding and circumstances versus standing firm and remaining bold. Overall, I treated August as an 'interim' month, just a fill-in until real life began. Don't get me wrong, the break was really nice and probably much my last one ever, but everyone around me was starting life and school and work, and for me, I was on pause.

And let me tell you, I hate pausing for too long. I just hate it. I've never been that kind of person. I hate being stagnant. It makes me restless and lazy and crazy. I need change and movement and projects and challenges and surroundings and new grace thrown my way. I like to be elbow-deep in work, in growth, in dreams — and not just any kind, but meaningful work, intentional growth, and ginormous dreams/prayers. Hey, that's kinda catchy. Maybe I should make that my slogan for the year... ;)

One of my "baby steps" were to turn 22. I'll save ya the suspense, I succeeded. I turned 22. I'm sure the suspense was just killing ya on that one. Anyway, with a new year, I made a list of 22 vows/dreams I'd like to do before I turn 23. :) This is my first time doing this so I threw in a mix of lifestyle changes, bucket list-worthy tasks, and also some simple ones. It's on the calm side — nothing like go bun-jee jumping or drink 22 shots in 22 hours or whatever people actually add to their bucket list. But this is mine, and this is what it looks like. Inspired by Elise's #makeitpublicmakeithappen, to share things with you. Here it goes!

22 VOWS:

1. Memorize 22 verses.
2. Cook 22 dishes.
3. Read 22 books.
4. Send 22 letters.
5. Do quiet time daily.
6. Take more photos.
7. Develop more photos.
8. Learn something new.
9. Start a bible study.
10. Pick up a new sport/physical activity. Barre?
11. Develop Etsy shop.
12. Be deeply invested in a community.
13. Be intentional with my time and relationships and money.
14. Run a race.
15. Visit 22 different cities.
16. Write a song.
17. Call family often.
18. Serve at a retreat.
19. Give the blog a makeover + ad spaces.
20. Volunteer.
21. Love my job.
22. Love God more than I did the year before.

XO. CHEERS!

BABY STEPS (AUGUST)

Tuesday, August 5, 2014

It'ssssss August! And you know what that means? Birthday month — for both this blog and myself! My favorite month of the year. :) I thought it was only appropriate to do a 'baby steps' post for this month with so much happening right now. In the past, entering August = entering a new school year, but since I graduated in May, I am officially done with school. No more first day of school outfit, no more syllabus, no more books... Entering August = entering real world. If you've been following me on Twitter or Instagram, then you know that I am actually relocating from Illinois to Minneapolis in just a couple of weeks for my new job. (!!!) Ah, it is so surreal. I want to try to document this transition into young adult life as much as possible on this blog. Hope ya don't get sick of me! Cheers!

--

send out thank-you letters | My missions trip to Japan was only possible thanks to a huge support system from family members, friends, and my church. I bought a huge stack of stationary to send out hand-written thank you letters to all of the individuals who supported me. Gotta get this done ASAP! I'm already behind!

have a bonfire | Because, summer.

go on a picnic | See above.

create a japan scrapbook | It was a month that changed my life and I don't want to forget any of it. :) I want to create a scrapbook with some of my favorite verses and photos to really capture the memories.

develop photos | I have so many photos stored on my external hard drive that were never published, not even from Italy (!!!), and I want to print them all out to line my future walls.

continue 'if:equip' reading plan | If you don't know about IF or Jennie Allen yet, stop everything you are doing (including reading my blog) and click here. This is a community & resource I am so happy I discovered and don't know what I did without. It was a timely discovery, and immensely helpful into my re-entry back to the US. I love all of the womens' heart of the If community, and they press me more into Jesus daily.

donate old clothes | Purging my closet was a chore that was much needed. Like, yesterday.

buy furniture | Because real world apartments don't come fully furnished? Shocking, right? I know. It was for me, too. I need to get me some real couches, rugs, kitchen stools, and the whole shabang. Grown up toys.

celebrate twenty two | Yup. Taylor Swift on repeat, please.

say goodbye | Cue sad music here. A huge part of moving also means saying goodbye. I've lived in Naperville for 10+ years. It's going to be bittersweet move. Sweet to begin a new exciting journey, sad to leave behind all of my best friends and loved ones. On the bright side, maybe this will call for one last summer bash, though?

move to minnesota | Entering real world.

BABY STEPS (APRIL)

Wednesday, April 2, 2014

Happy April, friends! :)

Many of my goals from March didn't happen so you'll see them repeated again this month. I was just busy wrapping up several personal projects, so I didn't get around to some of them but that's okay. Many other things were accomplished so I was happy to see these projects appear in April's list again.

Here are my baby steps for April. I actually created a fun little goals sheet for myself because I'm super excited about this month — and I created a free printable for you, too! Download it for yourself, add your goals, post it up where you can see it! If it's right in front of you, you'll be more likely to remember and accomplish the goals.

The one on the left is mine, and the one the right is for you! Just right-click it, press 'save', and print it! Easey-peasey. :)

I'd love to see what your April goals are, as well. Feel free to comment below or send me a link to your own blog/instagram sharing your goals. We can keep each other accountable! Don't forget #coffeeandhoneycomb

XO.

BABY STEPS (MARCH)

Wednesday, March 12, 2014

I haven't shared a "baby steps" post in awhile, and although we are already half-way through March, I wanted to take a beat to share how I can be more intentional for the rest of the month. Life was so busy with job interviews, trips, presentations; and today I finally had a huge chunk of time to myself to just be. It was GRAND. I took my time cooking a meal, and took even longer to eat it. I (finally) cleaned my room so that the floor was visible, and rearranged some furniture. New vibes. Now here I am sharing March's baby steps. Ya ready? :)

This is March's baby steps:

NEW SERIES | I have two series ideas in the works, and I want to implement one of them this month! They are both completely inspired and aligned to my blog name, coffee & honeycomb, each in different ways. (: I'm so excited to share them with you. The first one is "coffee in photos" which I actually posted on recently, but I thought it would be fun to share fun photos of coffee each week! The second series idea is actually a guest post series, which I will announce in the near future. Meanwhile, if you happen to find any crisp coffee photos, please send them my way. (:

ETSY | I plan on opening an Etsy shop! Nothing too fancy, just digital downloads of graphics/prints.

INVITATION | I will be designing a wedding invitation! My friend's older sister, as well as my mentor, is getting married this summer and asked if I'd be up for the job. :) I excitingly agreed. I've never designed a wedding invitation, so this will be a fun but scary venture for me.

2 WATER, 1 COFFEE | This is a step towards healthiness. I drink way too much coffee, and not enough water. So I have decided to start a new habit of drinking two cups of water for every cup of coffee I drink! That way, I don't have to forgo my coffee habits. Win, win?

BIG NEWS | I have big news... I want to muster up the boldness to share it with y'all this month.

LENT | It is the season of lent. :) What am I giving up? Television. I know my tv habits can be excessive at times, especially when I want to turn my brain off or hide away from problems, so for forty days, I want to be intentional with turning off the tv and turning in more towards the word. I am excited for what is in store for my soul, time, and relationship with the Lord as I do this! *Confession: I did watch an episode of Grey's Anatomy last night because I had a free hour to do and felt at peace with doing it. For me, lent is less about just meeting a goal and more about depending more on Jesus instead of tv. I want lent to be steps toward life transformation, and I never think cutting off something completely is always healthy, so if I can watch an episode of tv here and there without turning it into a full on marathon, I think that's okay. :) I'll share again if my thoughts change on this.

What are your thoughts on the lenten season? What does your March look like? :)

LIFE LATELY : BABY STEPS

Friday, January 17, 2014

  currently :
- Reading "Restless" by Jennie Allen. I'm only on chapter four, but so far? It is an absolute gem. I would recommend it to any senior in high school or college — or anyone in transition. (I plan on doing a separate post on this book later, but if you're feeling eager to check it out, find it here!)
- Applying to jobs... There's really not anything else I'd like to add to this. It's just... going. (Please lift up a prayer for me for God to open doors!)
- Playing Dutch Blitz! Have you heard of it? Think solitaire + speed!
- Watching "Pretty Little Liars."
- Drinking soy iced chai almost everyday. I think I need to find a good recipe to substitute the cash I'm dropping at Starbucks.

  baby steps :
What are baby steps? They're like goals—only less intimidating and less measurable. They're baby steps toward permanent lifestyle changes.

- Create a mood board.
- Apply to three new jobs a week.
- Eat turkey bacon and egg whites.
- Visit a new city.
- Keep squatting.
- Read a fiction book.

HELLO AUGUST!

Monday, August 26, 2013

I'm saying hello and goodbye to August in the same week. Time is moving so quickly for me right now and it is all too confusing. So, let's just simplify it and start by saying hello...

Hello. :) Today was my first day back at school and I just wanted to get back into the swing of blogging. A lot of things happened this month. I served at J-GEN (a midwest youth retreat) as a security guard, wrapped up my internship at HAVAS, turned 21, moved into my first college apartment with my best friends, became a small group co-leader, and started Campus Cursive. In between all that, Coffee & Honeycomb fell to the back burner. However, I've been dying to share all the GOODNESS that happened, so stay tuned... :)

I know it's nearly September so I'm very late to update on all things August, but it was a month I wanted to acknowledge because it is not only my birthday month, but it is also this wittle blog's birthday month! I started blogging August 2012 when I turned 20 to document bits & pieces of my life.

(Travel back in time with me and read my very first / 20th birthday post here! Or read about my very first day last year here.)

What about you? Have you started school yet? I hope you're having a great first week. :)

Spring Cleaning.

Monday, April 8, 2013

The month of March was a fun one. Traveled with new friends, caught up with old ones. Visited five different countries. Played in the rain, played in the sun. Got my phone stolen (twice). Watched an English musical, watched Spanish flamenco dancers. Rode a gondola in Venice, rode an ATV in Greece. You know, the usual. (:

Now, it's starting to look a lot like spring around here. Flowers have started to bloom and patches of dirt have been newly replaced with fresh green grass. My favorite part? Looks like flip flops are out for good.

But a change of season means more to me than just pretty nature. Like fresh laundry and new sheets or a clean page in the journal, spring is the opportune time to turn a new leaf in my own personal life. A total spring cleaning.

New priorities, new goals. This month of April, I want to actively start adding healthy habits and good decisions into my daily life. And it will look a bit like this...

  • Get back to the heart of worship. Recently I heard that what we know about God is, and will be, the most important things about ourselves. That is a very strong claim, but I am an absolute firm believer in it. With all the travels and craziness that consumed my life in the past four months, my pursuit to know my maker fell into the backseat more times than I'd like to admit. But, Jesus has reminded me of his infinite grace and love; and in response, I am shaking the dust off my hands (again) and fixing my eyes back on Him.  What will that practically look like? Fill my brain with more truth, less garbage. I would be kidding myself if what I read, what I watched, or what I talked about didn't influence my thought process and eventually, actions. I know alllladat is very closely interlinked. So, I want to start spending more of my free time reading encouragement and truth, reading the word, listening to sermons, and enjoying/pursuing interests the Lord has placed on my heart.

  • Take care of my body. I never had a healthy eating habit. Most of my meals were consumed in the car ordered from the drive-thru, or past midnight, or purchased from the bakery of the grocery store. Now that my body is decaying and my metabolism is slowing at an uncomfortable rapid rate, I need to start taking care of myself better. What will this look like? Eat less carbs, more veggies. Stop snacking or eating out of boredom. Eat more meals at the table, not on the couch. Pour less sugar in the coffee.

  • Work out every day. I picked up pilates this past month. Nothing extreme, just some youtube videos I found online, but I've actually noticed difference in toning and posture — and body image as well! I dread Insanity and I dread running even more, so it's nice that I've found a work out I enjoy! (:

  • Read two books. I don't work too well without a deadline, so I'm going to add some pressure and try to read two-three books each month. This month I plan on finishing two books before the calendar turns.

  • Journal. I come home in exactly 26 days. Before I know it, life in Europe will only be a memory, and the only thing real I'll have left are these blog posts, photos, and faded memories I manage to retain. And to help that retention, I want to journal each day — feelings, funny moments, interesting foods, lessons learned — to really make the days count.

December Goals

Monday, December 17, 2012

I know, I know.

I'm late by 17 days.
(^ Words of every sexually active boyfriend's nightmare.)

Just kidding.

But the first few weeks of December were not a pretty time. Finals + projects + papers — sleep = DEATH. If I were to blog in any of the moments, it would have probably read something like this...

  • "I hate my life."

  • "I ate 18 cookies today."

  • "I need more coffee."

  • "I missed my 9am."

  • "Where is the nearest window I can jump off?"

  • "Can you wake me up in 5 minutes? I'm gonna take quick nap."

  • "I give up."

  • "I hate my life."

Not joking about this one.

HOWEVER, I AM DONE Y'ALL. (: I officially finished last Friday and moved out on Sunday (yesterday). So I am writing to you from home sweet home in my bed infested with dog hair and feathers from my down blanket. Not such a pretty sight, either. So happy bear is me. (:

I guess the title for this post should be "Winter Break Goals."

  • BLOG EVERYDAY. This time, I'm for cereal. I have no excuse not to blog. And my fingers are just itching away to write a novel from blog withdrawal.

  • Get my student visa. (Ps. I'm not going to Belgium anymore, I'm going to ITALY! And in less than 3 weeks. January 3rd, to be exact. So let's add travel woes to my categories then. I promise my posts will be more excited and filled with photos of pretty scenery, not plastic black babies.)

  • Say good bye to friends and family.

  • Wake up BEFORE 10 am.

  • Send out XMAS gifts on time.

  • Make Christmas cards.

  • Apply for scholarships.

  • Apply for summer internships.

  • Pack for Italy.

  • Don't gain 50 pounds.

  • Read my bible.

And that's all she wrote. Hold me to these, guys.

What are your goals for Winter Break?

GOALS: NOVEMBER

Sunday, November 4, 2012

Happy November, everyone!

I know I said this last month but I just have to say it again: time FLEW BY. I feel like I just recently did one of these posts for October. Hope everyone is staying healthy and bundled up-- everyone around me is getting sick. My roommate included. ;( Not me quite yet, I feel like my immune system has toughened up since I was a kid. (Knock on wood.) I'm drinking my warm fluids and wrapping up in scarves. And my loving madre recently sent me my sweaters and jackets which was perfect for this past week's freezing cold weather. It really feels like winter has already hit the midwest.

October was a crazy one with midterms, client meetings, work, and church.

For now, I just want to quickly welcome the month of November and celebrate the season of fall and Thanksgiving. Cheers!

GOALS:

  • Be thankful

  • Send out cards

  • Keep blogging

  • Organize computer space

  • Do laundry

  • Go to class

  • Consistent quiet times

  • Love God

What are your goals for this month and what's your favorite part about fall? XO.

networking 101

Thursday, October 25, 2012

Recently my friend from high school texted me with this question: "Teach me how to network. It makes me scared."

Networking is scary; it's completely out of one's comfort zone to reach out to a stranger with the personal interest to get ahead in your career. How seemingly selfish.

So I decided to just take this opportunity and turn it into a Q+A post. (: Networking for me has become a habit and also led to great purposeful relationships and mentors. Small efforts of networking showed others that I was serious about my career; and so they were willing to help guide me in the right direction or lead me to those who can take me somewhere.

Don't think networking is relevant to you? Allow me to convince you.

Networking is important necessary. For those who think their laundry list of leadership skills and experiences will omit them from the horror of networking, let me remind you of this. It's not what you know, it's who you know. The employee of [dream company] is more likely to hire his son, even if he's an unqualified druggie, along with his unqualified druggie friends, over you. Any day. Truth: people are more likely to help out people they like or know over a stranger. Wouldn't you? You need an "in"— a foot in the door, and the only way to get that is through networking.

You learn (a lot).  As college students, we really don't have any idea what the real world is like. Or what the industry we're pursuing is really like. Even if we have a sparkling 4.0 as a GPA, we don't have a clue. All we know is limited to the dated textbooks and reminisces of has-been professors. So what we need, is a safe way to understand the job; first, to make sure it's the job you want. And second, to show the recruiter that you're the best candidate for the job. How can you accurately market yourself for a job if you don't know what the job entails? Recruiters will be impressed of how aligned your experience and their prospectives are.

It's not superficial. Some people are weary with the concept of networking because the relationships seem need-based or forced. But like everything else, you get what you make out of it. All relationships have a purpose. We have gym buddies, study buddies, classmates, roommates; and now it's time for us to develop colleagues. People who challenge you to be more ambitious, people who connect you to resources, people who can relate to where you are. Networking does not mean contacting people when you need something. It's intentionally building relationships. What does that look like? When you come across an article that might be of interest to them, send it their way. When you haven't spoken to them in awhile, drop by to say hello and update how you're doing (and then ask them how they are doing). You want to be fresh in their mind as "the person to go to" in terms of your profession. And eventually, like most organic relationships, you guys may or may not actually like each other (gasp); and these efforts to stay in contact won't be so forced. And that my friends, is
how babies are made how networking is done effectively.

So hopefully you understand the positive effects of networking more than you did before you read this. Let's begin on HOW to start your networking endeavor.

Get your name out there. Where? Everywhere. Literally. It's a small, in-direct step; but it'll help you eventually connect to the people you want to talk to. And it'll remind people that you're there. Digitally, you want to be present; Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, Blog sites, online portfolios. Just to name a few. Don't just leave your page static; update. Each update will bring your name to the top of their news feed. Outside of the digital landscape requires a little more effort. Meet with professors. Attend informational sessions. Develop a relationship with a worker at the career center. And when you do attend these things...

Always ask for a business card.  If you ever have a question or comment directed towards them, you won't have to worry about that one person you met once upon a time. You'll have the means to do so. Can't think of a reason to contact them? Create one. Make up a reason just so they remember you and notice that you are courteous. Thank them for their time. Bring up a new point or article that reminded you of what you guys talked about. Ask them a quick question. Schedule a time to grab coffee.

Join a club. This is something easy to do; especially if you're on a college campus. I know, there are expensive membership fees and it seems like all they do is go on bar crawls. Join them, because in a few years, those are the people who are going to be in the same work field as you, and you want to be friends with them. And also, it develops a good practice of working with others that you wouldn't necessarily be friends with. It'll teach you how to be a good teammate, to speak boldly and pitch new ideas, to make new friends, etc.

Be nice (to everyone). Everyone has a story to share, so be nice to them. Even if they are difficult to work with. Even if they are rude. Even if they are lazy. Do it; because it really is a small world, and you never know where they will be in the future. You never want to burn bridges. That's the number one "no" to networking.

Contact alumni. Learn about the students who graduated from the same program you are in. Where did they go post-grad? How did they get there? And if you find someone who is on a path you are interested in, reach out. Don't be hesitant or fear that you will be a creep— you already have the common ground, alma mater, and they'll be flattered you trust their opinion. Once you decide who to contact; find their email or connect on LinkedIn. Introduce who you are and that you're curious to learn more about their job as well as how they got there. Have a list of questions ready to ask them. (Don't forget to say thank you.)

Cold call. That means contacting people you don't know. Look at companies you are interested in and figure out recruiters' contact information. Email them and politely let them know you are curious to learn more about company culture as well as what kind of employees they look for. Schedule a phone interview; or if you're in town, ask to take them out to coffee. Conversations like this are so much better than just handing your resume onto a job board; because this is when you can showcase your personality and ambition and professionalism. You can also sneak in your resume at the end if it seems appropriate. It's the scariest, but the most worth it. You will never know where that conversation will take you; maybe not an immediate offer, but a connection.

Make weekly goals. If it's not in your comfort zone to reach out to a stranger, it'll most likely never happen unless you create a tangible goal. For me, I make a goal to reach out to two people each week; as well as help two people each week. I don't always meet the quota, but it keeps me in check. Trust me, it was nerve wrecking the first time; I stumbled over my words, I called them by the wrong name, I lost their business card, etc. But again, practice makes perfect. And the more you network, the easier it'll become. Some have led to dead ends, and some have led to great relationships. Some have taken a lot of investment and involvement, others required quick emails. In this case, quantity will lead to quality.

Lastly, be a human. Remember that the people you  are networking with, or even the people who are looking to hire, are first and foremost people. Just like you. And people are the same; they like nice people, interesting people, people who remind them of themselves. So don't forget your personality when you network; because that might be your golden ticket. At the end of the day, people want those they can trust to do their work and wouldn't mind staying at the office together til 10 pm if needed.

So, don't forget to smile. Don't forget to laugh. Don't forget to talk about your dog, or your favorite show, or secret hidden talent. And lastly, don't forget to breathe. (:

Good luck! And see every opportunity as a learning experience.

--

I know that was really long; hopefully some points were helpful. Some points were vague but not always obvious. If you'd like me to expand on some points, I'd gladly do so. That might be easier. For example; what questions to ask when you meet up with someone, how to properly write an email, how to create a Linkedin profile, etc. Comment below if you'd like me to expand on a topic or comment below if you have a networking tip!

XO.

Dream Big and Drink Coffee.

Friday, October 5, 2012

Earlier this week, Ogilvy & Mather recruiters came to our campus to share about their summer internship program and offer advice to interested students. At one point during the session, the recruiter mentioned that typically around 2,000 applications come in each year, and only 20 of them are considered, and then finally hired.

Of course, I was interested.

And today one of my classmates and I were having a conversation about this opportunity; discussing how amazing of an experience that would be as well as how difficult the application process seemed. He started to described Ogilvy as "the Harvard of ad agencies" and proceeded to tell me it was a waste of my time to apply. I responded, "It's not a waste of time. If Harvard is an option, you choose Harvard, always."

After the conversation, his comment and overall attitude just lingered in my head throughout the day. It forced me to realize that he wasn't alone in his thoughts, everyone thinks that way, myself included. We sell ourselves short and create limits on what is possible and what is not. Some call it "realistic," but really, it's a trap.

We need to have bigger dreams, bigger ambitions, and even bigger faith in ourselves that we can make it. One Forbes article I read recently described the top 10 traits of the most successful people in the US, and none of those traits included intelligence, inherent skill, or adequacy; however, traits did include persistency, optimism, and self-respect.

What does that mean? It means you don't have to settle for plan b and watch your better friends steal the life that you imagined. Countless times throughout my life, I quit a sport/hobby/club because I genuinely believed I wasn't "good enough"— someone else was better, prettier, faster, smarter, stronger, richer, etc. But it's not those type of people who make it in the world, it's the people who work hard, see their weaknesses and make adjustments, it's the people who envision a goal and make realistic steps to make it happen. Ultimately, it's the people who don't give up. You don't have to be inherently gifted or naturally smart or born from a rich family, you just can't give up.

We all have a "Harvard," and if you can define what that personally means to you, make it your goal right now and shoot for it. Because in the end...

Harvard is never a waste of time.

GOALS: OCTOBER

Thursday, October 4, 2012

It's that time of the month again!

GOALS:

  • Again, blog 4x a week. But this time, set a schedule.

  • Do my homework earlier during the day, not the night before.

  • Be healthier— get an adequate amount of sleep, drink more water.

  • Do not buy clothes.

  • Meet up with at least 2 professionals in the advertising industry.

  • Apply for MAIP.

  • Learn to discern when to say yes, and when it's alright to say no.

This is what October is already starting to look like...

Goals: September

Friday, August 24, 2012

Hello! That's my excited face. And I'm EXCITED to share on this blog my goals for the upcoming month, September. :) This week has been an awkward one because we're in the middle of transition— from summer to fall, from a lazy bum to a (kind of) diligent student, and from being blog-less to blog-filled(?). You get the point.

Starting this Monday, I will be a junior at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign majoring in Advertising, with a minor in Communication. That's a mouthful. That's what she said. I joke.

But this year is exciting for several reasons:

  • My roommate is one of my best friends.

  • The two of us are sharing a room meant for three people. Hellllo, extra closet space!

  • The class load for this semester is solely concentrated on media/communication classes, meaning I'll be studying the stuff that (I think) makes me passionate.

  • The following semester, my roommate and I will be in... wait for it... BELGIUM! Aw, yeah. (Side note: I JUST watched, "Taken," this past week, and every time I think of the words, "studying abroad," my anxiety level starts rising and I may or may not want to crawl back into my mother's wombs where it's safe and prostitution is far at bay. Ignorance really may be bliss. Welp, good thing I'm serving on the Executive Board for the organization that faces the reality of prostitution/sex trafficking.)

  • And yup. This will be my first year on the exec board for the organization, International Justice Missions (IJM). The org. is all about raising awareness and money for the social injustice currently happening in the world, helping victims of the social injustice, and doing work through prayer, because even an issue like this is the in the Lord's hands. My official title is called: Fundraising Director; I'm basically in charge of bringing in all the cash money for the campus organization and coming up with all the clever ways to do so.

  • Lastly, not to sound like a total nerd, but this is one of my favorite times of the year. Notebooks are fresh, pens are fully inked, the planner is just waiting to be filled with appointments and meetings, and ambition is at its peak.

I'm determined. And my determination usually materializes itself in a form of goals.

Fun fact: I'm a goal setter and a strong believer in "to-do" lists. I think time is meant to be spent with productivity, and personally, I NEED a vision of some kind of finish line; whether it be getting an A on an exam or checking off the box on the "to-do" list. (Come on, I know you know EXACTLY what I'm talking about. It's awesome and liberating.)

But rather than making a year-based resolution that I'll probably never even get close to finishing, I'm making goals based on the month. That way, the goals are more appropriate for the time, it's easier to envision, and much easier to accomplish.

So, without further ado, the goals for September 2012 are as follows:

  • Read a book. (Or two.)

  • Save up to purchase the Adobe Suite.

  • Blog at least 4x a week for all four weeks.

  • Study during the day; do not pull a single all-nighter.

  • Find a Zumba workout video. And then do it.

  • Keep the closet organized.

  • Do not skip a single class.

  • Make it to office offer for each professor.

  • Go to morning prayer.

  • (under construction)

And there you have it.

You may or may have not noticed that the "goals" are vague and definitely not measurable. There are no numbers or dates or anything. And that's the point. Goals aren't meant to be daunting shadows hanging over your heads forcing you into waves of guilt and hiding; they're meant to guide, inspire, to keep you on track. At least that's what I'm telling myself. So yes, my goals are vague, but one thing that is NOT on my list is perfection, and THAT'S intentional. I'm not aiming for perfection, but progression. So, so what if I only make it to MP once or read only half a book? I will rejoice because it's all about the progression.

What are your September goals?

Cheers to twenty.

I (finally) did it.

I left the teenage years behind, and entered my TWENTIES. (gasp) And what's a better way to enter such a prominent milestone than to enter it with a BAAAM and an imaginary crown on your head? Trick question. There isn't. So I did EXACTLY that. :) I wore a princess crown on my head for the entire month of August; and it was perfect that year twenty was also, in fact, my GOLDEN birthday. You know, turning 20 on the 20th. Dont judge. See crown.

But really. People say turning twenty years old is a "bland" year because you're "CLOSE to being legal but still so far." And now that I've experienced it myself, I would tell those same people  that phrase means absolute crap.

Turning twenty is a milestone. For me, it was a day to reflect on the past 19 years of major growth, and to look forward into the next twenty with excitement. It was the end of the teenage chapter book; meaning it is time to stop acting and thinking like one.

It is no longer acceptable or appropriate to be catty with other girls, to let boys' define your identity, to expect your parents to pay for your parking tickets, to sleep through your alarm, to not budget financially; and unfortunately, to indulge in too much fast food because you WILL GET FAT NOW.

And turning twenty ALSO means to be bold in personal passions or aspirations (responsively). Blogging happens to be one of them. So I deleted the handful of meaningless posts that used to occupy this blog; and I now plan on replacing them with an immense collection of true, personal, colorful, and dynamic posts. (: Hopefully, turning twenty also means, sorry to sound like a broken record, keeping to my word, keeping to my commitments.

I want to commit to this blog. And this blog will not be for anyone else; not to impress, amuse, please, or influence. I will blog whenever I want, how often as I want, and about whatever I want. This blog will be for me— whatever that means, but it sure won't be about gaining a bigger audience. HOWEVER, if someone does happen to appreciate, enjoy, or relate to this blog, that would be an absolute wonderful bonus.

Game on, year twenty. You better believe I'm going to own it.
