HOW TO HAVE YOUR BEST MORNING

Tuesday, July 7, 2015

Saturday mornings are my favorite. I wake up a little late, mosey on over to the kitchen, make myself some coffee + breakfast (or let's be real, microwaved leftovers from the week), catch up on my tv shows, get through my list of errands, and start my day. All of my morning relaxation and productivity then carries through the rest of the day. It's glorious.

Just writing that paragraph gives me feelings.
If you want to feel along, check this out. It is what morning dreams are made of.

Recently I asked myself, man, how can I have this every day? Well, after much deeper analysis and soul searching (aka common sense) into this particular dilemma, I came to the profound realization. I can have my Saturday morning EVERY MORNING - with the right adjustments to my night and morning routine, of course. And that is what I want to share with you, friends, today.

ARE YOU READY TO START HAVING THE BEST MORNINGS OF YOUR LIIIFE?

To be honest, my friends and family would probably laugh at the fact that I'm writing a post on this topic because if you know me, I am NOT a morning person. In fact, I am the antonym of a morning person. I press the snooze button multiple times, leave my house 10 minutes later than I should, and probably shouldn't have human interaction until there is a coffee in my hand.

However, now knowing how NOT a morning person I am, then you know that if these tricks work for me, they WILL work for the normal, non-lazy human - YOU. Now, let's roll.

Coffee & Honeycomb

DON'T WAKE UP FOR WORK
In the past when I set my alarm, I gave myself the smallest amount of time needed to get ready and get to work/school/an appointment/etc. This meant that my entire morning was solely to get somewhere else, it was an errand. You can imagine I dreaded my mornings. However, I realized that mornings are more than a time to rush and get out the door. It's more than getting ready to go somewhere else. Use your morning to pamper yourself, read a book, exercise, make a good breakfast, and watch how it dramatically changes the rest of your day.

PLAN BEFORE YOU GO TO SLEEP
This was one lesson my mom repeatedly told me growing up: plan, plan, plan. The less decisions you need to make in the morning, the more time and brain power you can spend on something more meaningful. So, plan out your outfit, your hair, your makeup, your breakfast, your purse/bag, all the way down to the shoes you're going to wear. I know that sounds TEDIOUS, but those little decisions that each take 3-5 minutes do add up and can stress you out when you're in a groggy mindset.

MOVE SLOWLY
One thing I love about my Saturday morning is that I can move as slow as I want and yet I still feel so productive. I make my bed, throw some clothes in the laundry, clear out my dish washer, yet it all feels so peaceful because there's no rush to get somewhere else. I've started implementing this tactic during the week. I turn on music, I drink my coffee slowly, and I try to complete one errand before I go out the door. Knowing that I have one less thing to do when I come home makes me feel so accomplished before the day has even started.

HAVE A QUIET TIME
Meditating and grounding yourself is so important at the start of your day. I like to give myself 15 minutes to pray and read my bible - to remember that this is the day that the Lord has made, I will be glad and rejoice in it. The day then suddenly becomes one big wonderful opportunity that is mine to seize! If you need recommendations on where to start, I enjoy following the reading plan on IF:Equip. Check it out and let me know what you think.

And there you have it. Having a good morning can really jumpstart the rest of your day and add an extra skip to your step.

Are you ready to have the best morning of your life? Do you have any morning routines you would recommend? Please share below.

Coffee & Honeycomb

Happy happy happy Independence Day, my friends! Wishing you a safe, fun, and magical day with all of your loved ones! :) May it be filled with... Good company and even better conversation. The opportunity to reconnect and reminiscence. The smell of the lake, sunscreen, and glorious grilled meats. Full bellies and full hearts. An excessive amount of selfies, tan lines, and popsicles. Red, white, and blue. And a spirit of joy and gratitude.

Coffee & Honeycomb
Summer is here in the midwest and I am soaking it all up -- literally! Every weekend you can find me laying out by the pool, throwing the football around, or enjoying a drink on the rooftop. I can not get enough of the weather these days. Summer, please stay forever.

The one thing about the summer though is that it makes me so lazy to get ready - does anyone else feel that way?! The idea of putting on makeup or styling my hair sounds less than ideal in this humidity. So how does a girl stay chic in the heat? Easy, just own the breezy summer vibe. Reach for anything easy, breezy, covergirl. But really, apply hot pink lipstick (because who wasn't obsessed with Britt's lips on The Bachelor) to add a pop of color. Sunglasses + lipstick totally completes a look without even trying. Find accessories to dress up your outfit that are light-weight and match with anything. Lastly, don't forget to stay cool and protect yourself from the sun. Always wear SPF (even on your lips) and cover your head when you can.

These are the items I am currently living in to stay chic without breaking a sweat. The best part? They are all so affordable. Check it out!

What are your favorite accessories these days? How do you stay cool + chic in the summer time?

Recently I've become a (self-proclaimed) pro on how to pack for weekend trips. After living abroad for four months out of a carry-on bag, I had to learn a trick or two on how to make packing less of a chore.

If you're doing it right, all you need is a carry-on bag (and a small purse) to fit your things. With these tricks of mine, you should be set and stylish for the entirety of your trip!

STICK TO A SINGLE COLOR SCHEME
Pick pieces that are within the same color scheme so you can easily mix-and-match. Save yourself any future headaches or wardrobe malfunctions by keeping it simple. You don't want to waste time figuring out which top goes with which bottom or if the shoes matches the purse. Bring clothes that have been tested as favorites so you can feel confident, comfortable, and effortless.

LET YOUR ACCESSORIES DO THE TALKING
Since I tend to keep my clothes pretty basic, I like to incorporate bold accessories to create some sort of statement. In the above mix, I tried to offset a lot of the black going on by throwing in a floral kimono for layering, a bright, blue bag for a pop of color, and unique shoes to add playfulness.

PACK DRYER SHEETS
I never pack a bag without at least one sheet for two reasons. The first reason is the obvious one, it makes your clothes smell nice after being stuffed in a bag. The second is more of a secret pro tip, if any of your clothes get wrinkled, you can lightly spray water onto your clothes and rub the fabric softener sheet to loosen out any small wrinkles. Works like a charm!

WEAR YOUR ACCESSORIES ON THE PLANE
Save space in your bag by wearing your heaviest clothing items (bulkier shoes, cardigan, etc.) and wear your accessories. Security now allows jewelry too so you don't have to worry about taking those off. I always try to wear a cardigan or scarf on a plane to save space in my bag. I also tend to fall asleep on planes (with mouth wide open) and like to put sunglasses on to save myself a bit of dignity.

SAVE YOUR TRAVEL-SIZE TOILETRIES
Most hotels partner with a beauty brand (C.O. Bigelow is a common one) and offer their own travel-size toiletries. Whether I use it on the trip or not, I like to take them home with me so I can pack it for my next trip! It saves me the fuss of looking for 3.2 oz containers or last-minute shopping. (Pro tip: My friend recently told me she saves her Bath & Body hand sanitizer containers to re-fill shampoo/conditioner for future trips. It's the perfect size with a large enough opening to pour in liquid.)

USE A POUCH - OR TWO
Staying organized is always a battle when all of your belongings is in a bag. Separating your items into pouches or smaller bags will save you so much time later on when you're searching for specific items. Pouches also tend to add more space in your bag because you can stack them. I always include advil, gum, contact case with solution, glasses, makeup, and electronic chargers in case I get uncomfortable on the plane.

Follow my tips above and watch as your packing experience becomes a little bit easier. :) Do you have any other travel tips? Join the conversation by sharing your thoughts in the comments below! XOXO.

Coffee & Honeycomb

Hi friends! Today I'm co-hosting a linkup with my dear blog friend, Kiki @ In Its Time. I've known Kiki for over two years now(!!!) and although we've never met IRL, her powerful words of encouragement, faith, and authenticity have impacted my life in multiple ways. If you haven't read her blog before, I highly suggest you set aside a couple of hours and get lost (here).

WHAT IS THE CIRCLE LINK UP:
The Circle is a monthly link-up for bloggers to get to know each other better while writing on fun, light-hearted prompts. It was created by Kiki two years ago with the intention of creating a space for bloggers of all sizes and from all places of the world to come together and build a better blog community. Since then, she's co-hosted with many other bloggers such as Meg @ Rivers and Roads, Bailey @ Brave Love, and Elizabeth @ Oaks + Oats, just to name a few.

THE THEME:
Considering that Memorial Weekend is right around the corner and people are ready to bust out their grills, flip flops, and swimwear, this month's theme is MOODBOARD15 — create a moodboard with 15 spring inspired pieces. You can interpret that in multiple ways: What are you most looking forward to about spring? What has inspired you this spring season? What is in your spring wardrobe? What about spring home decor? For my moodboard, I added items on my wishlist and things I've seen trending spring 2015 including both clothes and home decor. Take a look! :)

HOW TO LAYER CLOTHES LIKE A BOSS

Tuesday, April 7, 2015

Weather in Minneapolis has been unpredictable lately — high 70's one day, low 30's the next — making it a little difficult to do any closet shuffling or spring shopping. I'm refraining from buying anything "too springy' because who knows if we will receive another snowfall in the coming weeks! What's the happy medium? Layers, layers, layers. I'm talking cardigans on tees and tanks and maxi skirts. It's the perfect way to stay warm without the winter coats or sweaters. Layering is also a fun way to mix up your wardrobe without spending the money. My mix is pretty basic, but make your closet go further — patterns and florals, neons and neutrals, silk and cotton. Oh, the possibilities are endless.

This is what I've been living in lately...

Note that some of these items are comparable to what is in my closet. Most of my items are from previous seasons and are no longer sold in stores.

NOW YOUR TURN - WHAT ARE YOU WEARING THIS APRIL?
xoxo

FEBRUARY SNAPSHOTS

Wednesday, March 11, 2015

February was full of adventures and brunch dates, connecting with old friends and making new, wedding planning after wedding planning, treats and surprises, harsh winter winds and cozy knit scarves, and enjoying life to the fullest. So long February! To winter we say — #byefelicia.

WHAT TO BUY FROM OLD NAVY RIGHT NOW

Sunday, March 8, 2015

Spring is in the air, people, and I'll be one of the firsts to swap out boots for sandals and striped sweaters for...well, striped tanks/dresses. :) I know I love my basics so much but I do add pops of color some of the times. (Evidence: green purse + pink shoes below.)

As we transition out our wardrobe these next couple of weeks, I'm excited to share with you my current crushes and purchases. Today's feature: Old Navy. (: Old Navy is one of my favorite places to find inexpensive basics and trendy shoes both for myself and the fiance. I am such a sucker for their sales — today I found a beautiful navy toggle peacoat for only $15! #bargainshopper.

Here are some of my current crushes from Old Navy (they're all under $25!):

Coffee & Honeycomb

How cute is the emerald green crossbody bag and the camel pointed flats? I am obsessed. I didn't buy all of these pieces, but I did walk out with cute pixi pants (these + these) and tees for Euge (these). Can't wait to bring 'em out! (Note: some of these may be out of stock online, but check out an Old Navy near you. They might carry your item in your size!)

Do you shop at Old Navy? What else are you eyeing for the spring season?

FOUR PODCASTS TO ENCOURAGE WOMEN

Saturday, January 24, 2015

I've gotten really into podcasts lately (welcome to the 21st century, Jenny). They totally feed my type-A personality and make me feel productive no matter what I'm doing. I usually have one on all the time now; while I'm driving, sitting on a plane,  cleaning the house, getting ready, or even checking emails at work. It makes it really easy to multitask if you're doing something repetitive or handsfree. I found a couple of really good ones so I wanted to share them with you. :) They've all inspired, motivated, taught me something in one way or another, so I hope they can add something to your day as well.

Below are the links if you're reading this from your desktop, but you can easily access from mobile too! (Which is usually what I'm on.) I included my favorite stations as well as a couple of episodes to get you started.

THE LIVELY SHOW: http://goo.gl/kc2Oub
Jess invites many (relatable but TOTALLY INCREDIBLE) business owners, entrepreneurs, and designers to chat about intentional living. If you're looking for somewhere to start...
Lara Casey, CEO of Southern Weddings, Making Things Happen, PowerSheets
Joy Cho, Blogger and designer of Oh Joy

CATALYST PODCAST: http://goo.gl/WIuZT8
Catalyst interviews different Christian leaders, speakers, and authors to discuss practical leadership and and cultural insights. If you're looking for somewhere to start...
           Carl Lentz, Hillsong NYC
Ann Voskcamp, Blogger and seminar speaker

CROSS POINT CHURCH: http://goo.gl/fXZQ86
Pete Wilson is an incredible pastor and speaker, and all of his sermons are rich with nuggets of spiritual wisdom and truth and love while being digestible the whole time.

SERIAL: http://serialpodcast.org/
Surprise, surprise this is here. If you haven't listened to this yet, I'm sure you've heard articles, spoofs, etc. regarding this. Serial is a true life story about a murder mystery that took place in Baltimore in 1999. This will keep you on the edge of your seat and super frustrated the whole time, it's worth a listen. It's in chronological order so I would discourage hopping around. (Which is what I did because I was getting impatient.)

Let me know how you like them! If you have any other favorites, I'd love to check them out so please share them below. I'm always on the hunt for new stations. :)

xoxo.

THE BRANDING PROCESS: AVENEW

Thursday, April 24, 2014

My friend is a pharmacy student and is currently enrolled in a business course, which includes creating and developing a new business plan in the health sector. She came to me with a neat idea for a wellness center that offers natural and healthy food options and consulting. AVENEW: the avenue to a new you. She already had a mission statement and a vision in the works, and just needed some help with turning those concepts into concrete visuals.

As I learned a bit more about AVENEW and its direction, I knew the branding had to reflect its beliefs in organic and simplicity. Royal purple was her only mandatory. I wanted the branding to be modern and personal, so I explored two different paths. Shown above. One is a bit more modern and clean, and the other is a bit more earthy and casual. I created three elements that could be included throughout, and ensured to capture simplicity, simplicity, simplicity. It was definitely a fun and stretching project, seeing it was my first stab at logos. :)

My personal favorite was the one on the bottom right, but in the end, she decided to go with the one on the second right for her project. And the branding is done! :)

SHOP | MAILING MY FIRST ORDER

Monday, April 14, 2014

The best part of buying homemade goods is the packaging. There's so much thought and personalization behind it, and I really wanted to be intentional about my own packaging as I printed and shipped my first order, today. I knew I wanted to include kraft paper, a handwritten thank you note, and a Japan prayer card within each envelope — and I had to force myself to stop there. I was tempted to purchase customized stamps, stickers, and paper tissue to dress up the packaging, but it all costed a pretty penny. The Target dollar section is a goldmine when you don't want to spend too much. :)

Here is a peek into my workspace:

I'm sorry all of my posts have been on my Etsy shop lately — it seems like that has been the one thing consuming my mind. I'll try to lay off a bit and write more life lately and faith posts, especially with it being passion week and all. :) Thank you for holding tight and I hope you are having a lovely passion week thus far!

WHAT'S IN THE SHOP

Friday, April 11, 2014

I launched Coffee & Honeycomb Design Shop yesterday and have already made three sales!!! I know that's not a large number to most people, but to me, it meant the world. :) I'm thankful for the positive feedback and encouragement I've received so far!

A lot of this (this meaning small business, etsy, designing) is still new to me, so I'm figuring things out as I go along... Like where to find inexpensive shipping materials. How to present your products in a presentable way. Including branding items to make the process more unique and personal. Pricing. Just, everything. I'm realizing that more people who want greeting cards and wall art don't want the digital file because it requires more labor for them (printing, cutting). People have been asking for physical items; so I'm trying to adjust to this demand! A few of my listings have switched from digital to physical, and I plan to slowly move everything over to physical soon.

It's a lot of guess and check. Elise Blaha's old posts on "running a small business" have been tremendously helpful. I've been digging through her old archives to find insights and inspiration, and she has a lot of information from where she orders materials to the branding process. What about you? Are you small business or ersy owner? Any tips you've learned along the way?

If you hadn't had a chance to check out the etsy shop yet, here are some things you'll find. (: come stop by!

Don't forget to like us on FACEBOOK & spread the word to all of your friends. :) Thanks!
