Stand in front of your bathroom mirror and give yourself permission to stare. Pause any stream of unconsciousness that nests itself in your thoughts. Don't think, just stare.

Study what you see in front of you. Notice your unsymmetrical eyes or the scar on your chin or the un-plucked eyebrow strand, but do not let a single negative or critical thought contaminate this moment. Breathe in. Breathe out. And then, close your eyes and repeat this verse to yourself:
I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made; your works are wonderful, I know that full well. — Psalm 139:14
Say those words aloud over and over again until the words begin to run into each other and sound all funny. Say those words aloud until the truth of it seeps into every heart beat and you begin to actually believe it.

And whatever you do, please, please, don't ever stop believing these words.

  1. What a fantastically beautiful reminder... thank you so much! Hope your finals go well. :)

  2. A great reminder! Thank you, Jenny!

  3. jenny - as always - you write exactly what I need to read.
God creates beauty - so in return we are beautiful.

  4. I'm going to second Amy's comment. This was perfect timing and just the verse that I needed to be reminded of. It's so easy for me to look at the mirror and instantly critique what I see in front of me (especially since I pretty much just did that fifteen minutes ago!) but like you said, God created us uniquely, beautifully, and wonderfully. Thank you, friend! Hope finals are going well. :)

  5. love this, girl. thank you for the important reminder. it is so easy for me to see my flaws and forget that i am fearfully and wonderfully made. the world is so set on making suer we forget what is true about beauty and ourselves. we have to fight so hard for what is true, and it's people like you that whisper words of truth and encouragement that make a difference. :)
